upper gi versus endoscope

had my second appointment with dr. she said she's still going with original diagnoses of reflux. i have the upper gi on monday. she said it was not really necessary to do an endoscope unless something shows up on the gi test. she said they can tell if it's an ulcer, reflux, hiatal hernia or whatever by the gi and then if a more definitive test is needed they'll do the endoscope. i've had several people tell me that the upper gi is not definitive and that the endoscope is the only way to go. she also gave me aciphex since I can't take the prilosec (it gave me bad chest pains). One questions, how long can you be on this medication? I understand that you have to be monitored for liver tests and sometimes these ppi's can damage the stomach instead of helping. Has anybody heard about aciphex and how long it will take to heal this reflux. Or is this something I'll have for the rest of my life. I've only had these symptoms for about 4 months. would appreciate any help. thanks bunch.
