erosion of the esophagus

What actually happens to the esophagus if Gerd is treated only with diet and life style change? The reason I ask is due largely in part to the fact that I do not like to take medications.I would rather control this another way. Does the esophagus lining eventually erode? I have had numerous bouts with this over the last year since being diaganosed.It has been just recently that I have seriously started working towards healing myself.The acid nearly choked me to death about a week ago(no exageration)while sleeping.This scared me.
