Re: Rebound Acid Reflux

Acid rebound occurs because the proton pumps in the acid producing cells have been turned off by the drug and when they get turned back on they produce abnormally high volumes of acid for a while. I have had a few patients develop ulcers after stopping the PPI abruptly. The way to avoid the problem I think (this is only a theory) is to taper slowly off the drug by lowering the dose over a period of days and weeks.
