GERD,Hernia without heartburn ?

Hi I've been suffering from symptoms for over 3 years. They included: chest pain (simmilar to muscle pain) radiating to the left arm and shoulder, flu-like feeling and depression. All my heart tests came out fine so the doctors concluded that it was some chronic disease and put me on pain relievers and anti-depressive drugs. Recently I started to burp and feel as if there was a lump in my throat so my doctor sent me an upper GI X-Ray. Turned out I had a 10 cm sliding hernia and reflux. This was confirmed by an endoscopy. I'm now on prilosec (2x20mg), and my condition is much better (although the globus and burps still exist). My question: I always thought the primary symptom for GERD is heartburn, but I never had any ! How common is it to have hernia and reflux with such eluding symptoms for so long but NO heartburn ? One more question: does heredity plays a role in uppder GI diseases ? Both my father and my grandmother suffer from stomach problems (GERD, Hernia). Thanks Allan
