Is it possible for a weak LES to disappear

Can an LES go from looking wide open to normal?

Have had GI problems for more than 25 years, ulcerative colitis. I was told 3 years ago, that I might need my esophagus widened based on symptoms that I was having. During the endoscope, the comment was, no, it doesn't need to be widened, the LES is wide open.

I have been treated as if I had GERD and a sliding hiatal hernia for the last 3 years. Symptoms have gotten much worse and I was scheduled to have lap Nissen for GERD. This week prior to surgery scheduled for mid Sept. had an endoscope, motility test, colonoscopy_was told to cancel the surgery, baseed upon LES looking normal. How can that be?

The results from the endoscope this time around showed gastritis and small polyps in the stomach, can gastritis mimic GERD. What might gastritis and polyps in the stomach indicate, infection, something else??? FYI_The other two test showed nothing abnormal.

Thanks.
