daily meds

I seem to have gotten my GERD symptoms under control with diet and 1 dose of Prilosec per day for the past 4 months. Since I don't like the idea of being on medication forever, lately I've cut back from 1 dose of Prilosec per day to no meds or maybe 1 dose of Zantac (otc). Is it ok to take Prilosec "as needed", or is it only effective if you take it on a daily basis (i.e., is the effect

culmulative)? Thanks for your time.
