I'm a GERD sufferer, helped immensely by Nissen. I now work as an Endoscopy nurse, our docs sedate all patients very well. As suggested let your nurse know about your anxiety, we can offer lots of verbal reassurance in addition to drugs. The admitting nurses will tell you what to expect during the procedure, you'll sign permits, get a brief physical exam by the nurse, get an IV started. During the exam your heart, breathing, BP and oxygens levels are monitored, in addition to the doctor there is a nurse and at least one other nurse or assistant in the room. Another advantage of Endoscopy is that biopsies can be taken of the stomach and/or esophagus. All I remember about mine is getting the Versed(like Valium) and the next is feeling my stretcher moving and hearing I was on my way to Recovery Room.
