I have the same problem. As for the drinks, I just say I don't drink. That is quite acceptable these days. When offered coffee or tea, I say I don't drink those. Sometimes they offer milk, which is o.k.

I was at a little Christmas party recently with a buffet. They offered (to drink): wine, beer, and pop (soda). Luckily I had brought a bottle of water. Nobody questioned me. The only thing on the buffet which I was allowed to eat was the bread rolls. I had a tiny bit of the pasta dish and some mashed potatoes. Luckily I had no ill effects. Nobody asked me why I was eating so little.

As for eating late at night, that one is easy: "I'm not hungry". Small amounts of "forbidden" food once in a while don't cause me any trouble, but most of the time I try to stay away from them and follwo the diet.

I have had GERD for several years now, and for the past 3 years Prilosec (Losec) has done the trick. Lately the GERD has returned, so the dr. put me back on this "diet from hell". What I miss most is the chocolate. I was never into the booze very much, and I never drank coffee, so no big loss there.

My doctor does not recommend surgery, and after reading about so many problems afterward, I don't think I want to go there. Some people are worse off than before. I would rather stick with the "devil I know" rather than risk the "devil I don't know". I'm afraid the success rate is not high enough for me to risk it.

Having to explain to people why you cannot eat this or that is certainly a major pain, and I would also like to see other people's opinions or ideas on that topic.
