Not off topic at all. People tend to have varying symptoms due to acid reflux. Some have heartburn others do not. I have talked to people that only have a portion of their tongue that burns. In others their whole throat is involved, including pains in the ears. Some get hoarse. Some have asthma like symptoms. Then there are the pains in the back, front, sides etc. It is always best to have a doctor rule out other potential problems such as heart problems etc. After this has been done and the person has made all of the life style changes, a good gastroenterologist should be able to diagnose the problem. The 24 hr pH test would tell how much acid is actually being refluxed into the esophagus. An endoscopy would tell how much damage the acid has done. Sometimes during an upper GI you can actually see the reflux. If the patient is young and just started having reflux the doctor may opt not to test and try a Proton Pump Inhibitor to see if the symptoms stop. This is not an easy disease to diagnose or to live with. That is why this web site exists in hopes that through education and connecting with others with like symptoms, the road to recovery will be as short as possible.
