Werner, yes, of course, acid can aspirate into the lungs and cause pulmonary problems (I've literally had the air choked out of me now and then waking up, if I eat too close to going to sleep).
I don't know what ranitidin is -- I could look it up on the net, but I guess I'm lazy. The antihistimanes I took were Claritin (pretty good) and Benadryl (simply awful).
If it's just the UES that's implicated, that would be (as I said) unfortunate for those who want to benefit from the new procedures. One would hope there is some hope aside from slowly dying from those of us who can't take the medicines! But somehow, one has to wonder how the acid gets past the LES into the UES then, if the LES isn't loose. And the Stretta, for instance, in their press release, mentions "persistant sore throat, chronic cough, larygnitis, and difficulty swallowing" as things that are helped by tightening the LES.
