salty saliva

I don't know for sure how to use this. I want to find information about why would one person suddenly have bursts of extemely salty saliva that can actually burn the throat? The person of whom I am talking here is a friend of mine who, recently arrived in USA, does not think it is necessary yet to find a doctor.
