Hello sir, Your son's post operative vomiting most likely is due to some, hopefully minor, complication occurring following the treatment of his ruptured appendix. Sometimes a difficult to detect infection-abscess might be the cause: time and perhaps the addition of antibiotics may help resolve this. A kinking of the small intestine causing a (bowel) obstruction may also be the reason of his vomiting for such a long period of time post op. There may be other reasons. You'd best discuss the other possibilities with your surgeon. It would be highly unlikely that a hiatal hernia would cause his symptoms. Many, perhaps most, hiatal hernias produce no symptoms. I doubt very much if your son's hiatal hernia is at all significant at his age.
I hope his problems resolve soon. Once again, I think it most important that you talk with his surgeon about the details of his case.
Sincerely, Bradley Wong, MD, FACS Honolulu, Hawaii
