Re: Poor Muscle Contraction in Esphogus

Yes, there are several causes of poor esophageal function. In achalasia, the esophagus has to move food down against a tight lower esophageal sphincter and over time the esophagus swells and weakens. There are other causes as well. Two tests should help define the cause. An esophageal manometry directly measures both the esophageal function and the lower esophageal sphincter pressure. A 24 hour pH study helps to quantify the amount of reflux. A surgeon experienced in esophageal surgery or a gastroenterologist should be able to order theses studies and interpret the results. L. Cagle, M.D.
