Dear Paul: The rebound from stopping any of the PPI type of medicines can be substantial. Some patients have been able to start with a smaller dose for a month or two and then an every other day dose for a month of two. Sometimes, you can try going to a relatively weaker drug for a few months and then taper that off. One of the things that prompts patients to have surgery for reflux is not being able to get off PPI's without the return of substantial heartburn symptoms. L.Cagle, M.D.
