It is our expectation that the operation should last for a person's entire life. When looking at patients that underwent the open procedure 30 years ago, over 70 percent of them are still symptom free. It is my belief that this statistic will be even better in the laparoscopic era. We know from some studies that over 90% of patients who underwent laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication 10 years ago are still symptom free.
