Unfortunately, we do not understand all the abnormalities that irritable bowel syndrome can cause. It is possible that nonfunctional contractions of the stomach can cause reflux symptoms. More likely is that these contractions feel like reflux symptoms. Because reflux disease and irritable bowel syndrome are both found in a high percentage of the U.S. population, a fair number of people will have both problems. In your particular situation, I would encourage a repeat 24 hr pH study to determine if you're symptoms are indeed reflux disease. If they are, I would encourage you to see the surgeon who has experience at re-operative fundoplication.
