You can take Prilosec or any of the proton pump inhibitors when ever you like. A recommend to my patients to take it prior to the time that they have the most symptoms. If they wake up with heartburn, they take just prior to going to bed. It does not lose effectiveness when taken with food. And no, you will not explode if you do.
