Although the back pain and difficulty taking a deep breath may be due to reflux disease, the popping sensation is not. Depending on the breathing problem, this symptom may also be related to the popping problem. I suspect that you have either a costochondral dislocation (rib cartilage separation) or a xyphoid process fracture. Often, these are very painful but I have seen many patients complain only of slight discomfort when breathing and hearing a popping sound when getting into a specific position. These are not serious and are often missed by physicians.
