Hi all.
I am new to this board and am so glad to have found it!!! It's very comforting reading all of your stories; no one else seems to understand what we're going through (including doctors).
I am only 30 years old and was diagnosed with mild to moderate sleep apnea about 2 or 3 years ago. I'm not overweight and I believe it's something I inherited from my father who has had it chronically much of his life. In addition, about nine months or so ago, I was having problems swallowing, feeling like food was getting stuck going down, etc. I went to the dr., did my barium swallow, and was diagnosed with mild reflux which seems to have hit suddenly and gotten even worse since I was diagnosed. I am on 30mg of Prevacid daily which seemed to have really helped initially (I know this for a fact because when I tried going off of it, I felt HORRIBLE!). I rarely have heartburn but do have the bloating, shortness of breath, and feeling of being "choked" in the throat and neck all the time. Also, my apnea seems to have gotten worse as well. Before, I was able to avoid wearing a CPAP mask but now, I'm not so sure if I can go much longer because I just feel like a big piece of doodoo most mornings, dragging myself from bed.
My question is this: does anyone know if GERD aggravates apnea? Do these two disorders sometimes appear hand in hand? Just wondering what your thoughts on this are.
Thanks, and keep up the postings!
Jon
