Is surgery for me?

Starting about four months ago when would eat (especially things like bread) I would feel the food getting "stuck" in my lower esophagus. At that time it was the only sympton that i felt. Two months ago I went to a gastroenterologist who did an endoscopy. He told me that I have a hiatus hernia and erosive esophagitis. He placed me on Previcid once a day and told me that my symptoms should resolve. Since then I've developed incidents of fairly severe heartburn. My doctor wants me to go for motility and pH testing next. I've heard different things about surgery. If I do go for surgery will it help or possibly hurt my difficulty in swallowing. I am thin to begin with and now that eating has become more of a chore than an enjoyment I am losing weight.
