IEMD is poorly understood. What it means is that your ability for the esophageal muscles to push food down your esophagus is severely impaired. Some physicians attribute this to severe GERD in patients such as yourself and we have seen some patients improve their motility after surgery but some do not. I believe that there are groups of patients whose esophagi are so severely injured, they can not recover and there are other groups who are impaired but their muscle can recover. However, there are people with little or no reflux who have IEMD as well. The question in people like you is that you need surgery but do we do a partial or complete wrap. I would have to see your motility to render an opinion. Hope that helps. Alan White
