The medical treatment of GERD, whether it is diet, drugs, or both only serves to treat the symptoms of GERD. It does nothing to the problem which is a mechanically deficient LES (sphincter). That is where the surgical treatment of GERD is clearly superior to medical treatment. Surgical treatment allows you to once again have a normally functioning sphincter and you no longer reflux. With medical treatment you are still refluxing. It may not be acidic, and therefore a base, but it is still reflux and I submit to you, that is why you still have problems. If GERD is the problem, the only way you will be well from this is with surgery. Alan White
