The documented success rate for the two alternative procedures is considerably lower than for the nissen, about 70% vs 90-95%. However, considering that the alternative procedures are less invasive, perhaps they are worth trying even with the lower success rate. On the other hand, there have probably not been enough of the new procedures performed to have a good picture of either the risks or the success rate.
The final thing to consider is that it is unknown how successful a nissen will be after a failed bard or stretta procedure. Before undergoing one of the new procedures, it would be nice to know that you could fall back on a nissen if you were one of the 30% of cases in which the new procedure failed. But right now we don't know if that is a realistic option.
