For the motility test (the test is called a manometry) you'll swallow a small, flexible, clear tube. The tube's circumference is not much bigger than a spaghetti noodle. It goes all the way down to your stomach. Along the way it measures the motility of your esophagus. My doctor explained esophageal motility to me this way: the esophagus, he said, is not just a tube where food falls to your stomach. Rather, it's a muscle that pushes food along it's path. And the manometry measures how well the muscle works. The test answers the question, how well does my esophagus push food downward to my stomach?. Low motility means the muscle isn't working as well as it should. My results showed normal motility at some points along the esophagus, and low motility at other points. Some people find this test unpleasant but it didn't bother me at all. It's not the least bit painful.
Good luck to you.
