I've never taken Reglan, but I remembered this answer to someone from the Ask a Doctor Board (archives, 5-12/00, Dr. David Cloyd:
"Susan, The reason I worry about reglan is because of a peculiar kind of neuromuscular side effect of similar to what you are descbing with your jaw muscles, only much worse, and at times permanent. It tends to effect the facial muscles, causing spasms and loss of control of these muscles. The eye muscles and tongue in particular can be effected. The term oculogyric crisis used in the medical literature. The first time I saw it I thought my patient was having some bizarre kind of stroke. He couldn't even communicate to me what was wrong. Fortunately, it stopped, after 48 hours. Diarrhea is a common, but less serious side effect, and tends to force people to reduce the drug dose down so low that they can't in turn control their reflux. Another way of putting is this. Patients who have only mild to moderate reflux and NORMAL motility usually can be well controlled with PPI's, diet and behvior modification, and don't need Reglan. Patients with severe reflux,on the other hand, usually fail medical control even with Reglan thrown in, and simply do better with surgery. I think propulsid was a better drug than Reglan for controlling symptoms - its just that the FDA doesn't like those nasty cardiac arrhythymias. I would sure try to get rid of the muscle relaxant if at all possible. Is it of so much benefit to you that you can't try a trial off it to see what happens?"
