H2-blockers like Zantac, Pepcid, and Tagamet block histamine which in addition to other hormones is partially responsible for stimulating acid production. PPI's such as Prilosec directly disable the stomach cells which create acid and are therefore more effective regardless of what's actually stimulating acid production.
