Sometimes this is done, though more commonly it is done at the time of manometry, which is another test which measures esophageal function. This allows positioning of the catheter based on the pressure determination of the LES. There may be a new way in the works soon, which involves a pH probe that is attached to the distal esophagus at endoscopy and does not require a tube to come out through the nose for 24 hours.
