What your doctor is referring to may be Barretts esophagus, in which the lining of the distal esophagus begins to looks more like the lining of the stomach. It is probably not that stomach lining has grown upwards, however. The importance of this, if it is confirmed by biopsy, is that you might need periodic biopsies to make sure that it does not progress to cancer -- much the same way that we recommend pap smears or mammograms.
