My experience with GERD

Folks,

I have had problems with GERD for two years now. It all started one day after I had some pizza and went to bed. I woke up for the first time feeling pain in my chest. I thought it was heart burn, because I ate pizza and went to bed. So I had some TUM's and 2 hours later the pain went away.

I started to have the same symptoms every few weeks and 1 night it was unbareble that I went to Emergency. They took xrays of my stomach and said that my stomach was full of gas and the gas was pushing upwards into my lungs and chest. I was given pain killers and the pain went away.

I went to see a specialists the next day and he put me on Prevacid. I took Prevacid for a week but felt bloated and constapated all the time. So the doctor put me on Aciphex. I take it nightly and have been taking for more than two years now. When I stop taking the medication for over a week the symptoms start again. I'm 6'4" 160lbs.

My doctor has asked me to loose some weight, but it is hard. He has also asked me to sleep with my body elevated 30 degrees. I have added some pieces of wood under my bed to elivate it 30 degrees and it seems to be working, because this stops the acid and gas from moving up my stomach and into my chest.

Has anyone else tried this? Please let me know.

One last question. Just curious for the folks who deal with GERD. Do you or have you before your symptoms started lifted large amounts of weight (100-200lbs)? Their may be a connection to GERD. I will write more about it once I get some responses. Thanks.
