Jean, your insurance company may be driving your length of stay (although it will deny this vehemently, believe me). I went into the hospital on a Monday afternoon (surgery was at dinnertime) and was discharged on Wednesday a.m. I would have been ready to go home early Tuesday evening, but not Tuesday a.m. I had two things that made the hospital very uncomfortable -- first, the bed was awful, and second, my roommate had problems that kept a swirl of commotion going on whenever she was in the room, which was most of the time. (Otherwise, the hospital was truly fine! And the staff was marvelous.) But I would try to make your surgeon understand that another 12 hours at least would be very helpful for you, given that you live alone.

I definitely needed someone with me at home the first few days. It's just too much effort to do much of anything beside rest. People were calling me and stopping by with plants and gifts too, and while I appreciated all the love, I sure couldn't face it directly. I was lucky and had someone with me full-time for eight days. That was a little too long, but I sure wasn't going to turn it down either! ;-)

My insurance company called me with about 60 questions right beforehand, and from what I could tell, it sounded as though I had coverage for some sort of home healthcare aid, if I were going to be alone afterward. So you might want to check that out before you make a final decision as to how you're going to deal with everything.

Most of all, DON'T WORRY. If you're not ready to be released, you won't be released!
