Hi Lisa-

Sure wish I knew the answer to these questions! It has been the bane of my existence for 7 years now, 2 years post fundo. All my tests say I am not refluxing, but I get periodic attacks of throat/vocal pain. Speech therapy has helped me learn how to loosen up the muscles in my throat and it has helped about 50%, but I still don't think doctors quite know or understand about those of us who have relux laryngitis - for instance, why the PPI's don't work for us---why? why? why?

One doctor I spoke to speculated that it is indeed vapors from just tiny drops that emerge from the LES, but our esophageal and laryngeal tissues are super sensitive and burn easily. I have had an ENT check my throat when I was MISERABLE and said my vocal cords weren't red at all ----but that my muscles were not closing them properly. My speech therapist claims pain is from muscle, not from the actual burning -----I have driven myself insane over the past several years and finally reached acceptance with my current state:

I have decided I will always have voice problems, will never sing in a performance mode again, and to quit looking for answers as trouble will indeed find me if there's a problem ---so eventually I will have an answer of some sort. Ironically, I had continued to sleep elevated two years post fundo and then started sleeping flat about two months ago and guess what - I am definitely no worse and possibly better, which suggests it may be dripping down from my sinuses causing pain. But ya know what --- I feel like we all will NEVER know so I just accept my fate and try to be thankful for the gifts I do have and not mourn the loss of those that have been taken.

Good luck!
