I have GERD and a hiatal hernia and when both get really bad I too have the pain in the middle of my back and upwards. My doctor also told me to eat a very bland diet along with taking my Prilosec when things are acting up. Just taking Prilosec does not always help me, I need to watch every single thing I eat and drink. No caffeine, low fat/acid foods. Stay away from citrus juices, spicy foods, anything with tomato sauce, ketchup, pepper, etc. I kept a food diary for a while to see what things made my GERD worse and that really helped me a lot. For about three weeks I lived on Cream of Wheat, white rice, oatmeal, and herbal teas. Boring but it really did the trick. Hope this helps....good luck!
