If you don't live in a teeny small town with only one GI specialist, or have health insurance issues that force you to use this place, I'd consider firing the doctor and find someone else.
I also prefer unsedated endoscopy, and as you point out, it's really not a major problem. Your wishes certainly ought to be respected in this area.
The reason I would consider firing the doc over this is that if he doesn't listen to me about this, what other issues will he just act according to HIS CHOICE rather than my best interest?
I didn't have a horribly bad reaction to the drugs--just fell asleep for a day and a half. So it was kind of a pragmatic decision that I couldn't afford to take that much time off my life. But some people have big issues with former substance abuse, etc. Sedation for this minor of a procedure is totally optional, and a patient's wishes ought to be respected.
P.S. In other countries, unsedated endoscopy is the norm. In Scandanavia they have done research comparing sedated to unsedated, to identify what small subset of patients should be offered sedation. But the default or "normal" procedure is to do unsedated.
