As for the PPI not having healing properties, it does. It stops the acid which stops the refluxing which than in turn "Heals" the esophagus. It ALL depends on how BAD ones reflux is in order to determine when one should stop. If someone only needs to be on a PPI for say a few weeks to a few months and than they're healed, well than that just means their reflux wasn't bad! GERD is a disease and it's normally with one for life. This is why some people need a PPI MUCH longer than others. Everyone gets hearburn, but NOT GERD. They're two different things. I had reflux as a result of WAY TOO much coffee. I was given a PPI for three weeks, stopped coffee, and today I'm fine, but if GERD is the problem, than PPI's are usually life long, or until the problem is fixed, whether it be diet or surgery. It depends on how much acid is refluxing up. Not everyone is the same when it comes to this. Some are VERY mild, when others are SEVERE. That's the difference.
