Robyn,
While I can understand your anxiety about the bedside manner of the doctor, there really is not much to be worried over in terms of an endoscopy. I had my first one when I was 12. I have a terrible gag reflex and at that point had never been able to swallow a pill. I had no problems whatsoever then or any of the other times i have had scopes done. The sedation will calm you enough that you will have no cares in the world. I've had four regular egds, one stretta, and one ercp and never had any problems except for drowsiness and amnesia from the time during the procedure. It's a piece of cake, really. On the otherhand, from experience, i can tell you that you want to find someone who has better bedside manner to treat you. The most technically proficient person won't do you any good if you can't communicate with him/her.
Dan
