Hi Eric:

I had just recently seen my cardiologist for a routine exam and mentioned that there had been a study of heart problems and nissen fundoplications that I had read here on the board. While we were discussing it, he mentioned that he has seen patients who have had their Vagus nerve damaged during the nissen procedure, and after that, they have heart rhythm problems. Apparently the Vagus nerve helps in the patterns of digestive, swallowing, heart beat and lung function. So it surely can affect the heart beat, I would think, if it were severely irritated with reflux.

It appears to me that you need perhaps to find a teaching university that specializes in digestive disease and swallowing disorders. I went to the University of Washington in Seattle -headed by Dr. Carlos Pellagrini, chair of surgery for the U of W. Also, I see where Hawk is going to send you some further information on a doctor who specializes in electric patterns in the heart and body.

I would guess that the relationship between heart and esophageal function will take a sophisticated research doctor - do not give up hope! You will find a good doctor, and a good way to calm this down! Take Care - Sharon
