Hi Sue,

A lot of babies seem to have reflux. Fortunately they grow out of it. One of the main reasons for spitting up is swallowing of air. They eventually learn how to avoid it, in spite of their parents.

A baby is supposed to be on his/her bac when nursing the air in the bottle is supposed to be away from the nipple. Some plastic bottles have a collapsable plastic bag inside which should be squeezed to remove air before giving it to the baby.

If a baby is not really relaxed or is distracted by lound noises or surroundings it can become very upset and not get a good seal on the bottle. Swallowing air prevents the swallowing REFLEX from moving the contents down the esophagus in a uniform rhythymic way. This is one of the reasons why they cry in frustration when you BOTH KNOW they are hungry. This can also occur with breastfeeding. One of the falacies about breastfeeding is that the blanket is for modesty purposes incase of public feeding. The blanket is even more important to give the baby a distraction free, safe and relaxing environment.

When a baby is finished taking the milk or whatever, it is important to gently put him in a vertical position resting the head on your shoulder. One minute in this position is usually enough to get a big burp of air. If the baby was simply allowed to lie down or stay on his back you would have seen a good portion of what he ate come back up.

Your grandchild is probably normal. Good luck.
