Hi Carol. Its an exciting time isnt it?!! It would be better I suppose if we never had to think of our stomachs so much though! Anyhow, I was told to come off ppi to get pregnant, and try and do without anything at all in the first three months. At the moment I take gaviscon after all my meals, bisadol or something if need be, and if really need to zantac 75, which is about 1-2 times a week. My GP said this was fine, and that although its preferable not to take anything, zantac has been around for a while, considered 'safe' and at the smallest dose, shouldnt cause any harm. You said you were taking 75mg a day, and that sounds sensible if you've just quit the ppi. I felt the same as you at first, that the zantac didnt help quite as well as the ppi, but it did get better in time, so hopefully that will be the same for you. The GP also said that if need be, especially near the end of pregnancy where i might get bothered with heartburn more, that the zantac can be upped to 300mg, which has gave me a bit of reassurance! Now all I have to do is get pregnant!! The GI doc told me that he's seen lots of pregnant women presribed ppi when necessary, by himself and by obstetrician. So i guess a lot of people get themselves in this situation!!

As for the time period for stomach to get back to producing normal amounts of acid, I think everyone is different and it depends how long you've been on the meds for, for me, it took a good 5 months(I was on the ppi 3+years), love Heather
