I was recently diagnosed by an ENT as having "reflux". He performed some type of scope in his office (up the nose, down the throat)and ordered an upper GI with Barium etc. I was told by his nurse by phone several weeks later that I had reflux and a prescription had been called in to my pharmacy. That was it. I was extremely surprized by this because I don't have heartburn. Instead, I have a problems with lower GI (diahrea, etc.) The symptoms that lead me to the ENT were primarily with my mouth, especially my tongue: burning, sores, and the sides are actually wearing away. It was difficult to eat and I was afraid I had tongue cancer. I also was experiencing a feeling of grit in my mouth and of something lodged in the throat. Also for the past few years I have had lots of earaches, the muscles in my neck and shoulders ache, swollen glands, my skin hurts to touch it and my eyes burn. The ENT said the mouth symptoms were all common with acid reflux and that one could have it without knowing it, or without having heartburn, etc. He didn't really address the earache, muscle aches etc. However over the past several years when I went to my regular MD unless I had a sinus infection he said I had post nasal drip. Anyway the ENT prescribed Nexium. To make a long story short, after I began the treatment, I started actually having heartburn, I also have constant diahrea (sometimes 4-5 times a day)and abdominal pain including a sharp burning in my stomach. I have tried Prilosec also, with the same results. After 5 weeks of this, I'm exhausted, dehydrated, feel worse than I did before, and my mouth is no better. My dentist believes that if I have acid reflux so badly it is eroding my tongue, that it would also be eroding the enamel on my teeth, which is not the case. Does anyone have any suggestions? For now I have stopped the PPI's and am considering another Dr. I have read about Burning Mouth Syndrome, but found no mention of the sides of the tongue wearing away. Thanks for any help!!
