Lisa, the other point is that one should not automatically assume that if one is feeling better, then there is less erosive damage. One of the aggravating things about GERD is that there is so little correlation between severity of symptoms and severity of damage.

I am totally with you that I FEEL much better when I am off PPIs. But until I had my surgery, the esophagitis would get worse when I was off PPIs.

If there is endoscopic evidence that the esophagitis is better without PPIs, then sure, go for it. But one cannot assume that lessened symptoms = less erosive damage.
