This would be true when the anatomy is nearly normal, that is the esophagus goes down and turns left, into the stomach, which from there expands upward, out and downward.
But many people with hiatal hernias do not have normal anatomy, and therefore laying on the left side may cause more discomfort, from pinching or squeezing the top of the stomach and/or vagus nerve, and crowding the heart, thus causing the patient more discomfort.
Thus, master, you will find many GERD/HH sufferers experience discomfort while lying on the left side anyway.
