I think the most important thing to remember is that the drugs they use to 'sedate' you also have the effect of taking away your mind's desire to panic because of the sensation.
Benedryl is generally not a sedative drug, and so the feeling of you being drugged panicked you, and so they gave you the morphine.
Just remember the very first drugs they give you are designed to sedate, so there will never be a moment of panic AFTER the drug has started to take effect.
