The reason why Hydrochloric acid supplementation and things like vinegar and lemon juice in water help digestion is that the LES closes more tightly when it senses acid in the stomach. So if you are low on HCl, it may cause the LES to malfunction. You are right in that drinking vinegar will irritate an already inflamed esophagus, but you can buy betaine or glutamic HCl at healthfood stores in capsule form that stay in your stomach and do not burn your esophagus. Consult a trained naturopath--they can explain about dosages. And as far as psuedoscience goes, don't forget much of mainstream medicine isn't based solidly on science or research either. My feeling is if it works, great.
