Barretts is a condition of the esophagus in which normal white lining is replaced by an abnormal red lining. It occures in about 10% pf people who have cronic or longstanding GERD. It is my understanding that acid continually backing up into the esophagus thru a weak LES causes the barretts. Alcohol and smoking may irritate the esophagus, but I don't think it can cause barretts on its own.
