Very good point.
The explanation I've heard re: alcohol is this: It causes the LES to relax. Those of us who have incompetent LESs thus greatly increase the chances of reflux when we drink alcohol. It is the acid that damages the esophagus, not the alcohol (assuming you're not drinking inordinate amounts, of course).
I may be one of the few people whose doctor said I could drink all I wanted. My GERD problem was due to a missing LES. As I had no LES to protect, I was free to drink. However, I didn't drink -- it made me feel worse. (I'm a very light drinker, so I wouldn't have been tempted to go crazy anyway!)
