LES dysfunction is the primary cause of GERD. There are many reasons why the LES valve does not work. The most common are geometry changes secondary to hiatal hernias. Although severe acid reflux can worsen LES function, this only occurs in the late stages for GERD. Weight training is unlikely to increase a hiatal hernia and therefore is ok to do. Of course, it is more likely to increase acid reflux by increasing abdominal pressure. I would recommend weight training on an empty stomach to improve your comfort.
