Continuous Heartburn

Every day I have heartburn usually commencing first thing in the morning but by evening it is almost unbearable. It is a constant burn and pain in the middle of my chest. Occasionally I wake up at night with acid emptying into my mouth. My mother was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia years ago. Are hiatal hernias hereditary? I am currently on over the counter Zantac which I have to double the dose twice a day to help with the heartburn. I intend to go see a doctor. Should I see a GP or a specialist and what would their specialty be?
