Zollinger-Ellison syndrome is excessive gastric acid production secondary to a small pancreatic tumor. Reflux disease can be especially bad in patients with this problem. More importantly, this syndrome leads to severe gastric, duodenal, and small bowel ulcerations. Many patients have severe abdominal pains secondary to these problems. This syndrome is very rare and occurs in less than one in 1 million Americans. The most common cause of postoperative symptoms after a laparoscopic fundoplication are irritable bowel syndrome, gastritis, duodenitis, pancreatitis, gallbladder pain, and liver diseases.
