Acording to my doctor cigarrettes has a lot to do with heartbun ( it afects the LES preasure some how). I smoked the last 15 years of my life ( I'm 29 now) and have GERD since I was 20. This year they found barrett in the biopsy. I read cigarrette is one of the mayor cause for people with GERD to developed barrett. Of course I smoke my last cigarrete the day my doctor gave me the diagnostic. Now I can't forgive myself for being so stupid and heart myself in that way. Just quit !!

Here's the address for USC Thoracic and Foregut Surgery: http://www.surgery.usc.edu/foregut/index.html

The article I mentioned is found here: http://www.surgery.usc.edu/foregut/gerd.html#gerd5 I made a mistake earlier. Dr. DeMeester is quoted in the article, but the article doesn't have an author listed.
