When does GERD heal?

I have been on Prevecid/Zantac for Rx of GERL for about a week now....Generally speaking, when does the esophagus heal sufficiently from associated heartburn trauma that the symptoms start to disappear? I am working on my nutritional habits, modifying my life style, losing weight, and whatever else is needed to feel better. Although I feel a tiny bit better, I am still quite symtomatic. (I really messed up with my love of coffee, chocolate, greasy foods, carbonated beverages, sometimes just before bed.)...I guess what I'm really asking is....How long does it take the body to repair the damage? Thanks for any general information you can provide. PS: Does over-the-counter "Prelief" really work in eliminating the acid in foods like coffee, tomatoes, etc?
